An optical laboratory and a mental health rehabilitation agency – it’s a relationship that you don’t often see. But it’s a partnership that has worked well for Laurel Hill Center.
SWEEP Optical, a full service ophthalmic laboratory, contributes financial support for psychiatric rehabilitation services and employs community members with psychiatric and other disabilities. SWEEP is an acronym for Supported Work Experience and Employment Program.
In 1991, the state of Oregon requested a meeting and site review to consider contracting with our Qualified Rehabilitation Facility (QRF) for optical work. Because of their confidence in our management practices of past QRFs, Laurel Hill Center was awarded the contract to provide prescription eyewear for Oregon Health Plan (OHP) recipients.
SWEEP’s tag line, “We’re focused on value,” represents the lab’s commitment to providing hundreds of affordable, attractive frames, with 100 styles approved by Medicaid—a far cry from the limited selection people had to choose from before the lab began.
Last year SWEEP provided eyewear to 225 optometrists and other providers statewide serving OHP and non-OHP clients, and produced 32,500 pairs of glasses, bringing our cumulative total to over one million.
