Our History


1972 Begins as a drop-in social club – Harmony House - for patients discharged from the state mental hospital, and serves up to 25 people a day.
1973 Establishes non-profit corporation Community Services of Lane County
1978 Starts first business SWEEP Janitorial with employment as its major focus
1981 Adds Supported Housing services with federal independent living funds
1985 Changes name of non-profit corporation to Laurel Hill Center
1990 Constructs and moves to a new building at its present location
1990 Builds Laurel Grove Apartments, a 15-unit apartment complex on Cleveland Street in Eugene, with HUD financing
1992 Adds Hospital Transition Program services
1992 SWEEP, a subsidiary of LHC, develops a full-service optical lab
1997 Purchases two duplexes on F Street to provide affordable housing for people in the Housing Transition Program
1997 Builds Laurel Court Apartments, a 16-unit apartment complex on Jacobs Lane in Eugene, with HUD financing
2004 Presents its first annual Art Exhibit and Auction to educate the public about mental health issues, and raise money to support an art scholarship fund for participants
2004 Purchases A Street Apartments, a 12-unit, 2-bedroom apartment complex in Springfield to serve people with dual diagnoses
2005 Serves more than 500 people annually
2006 Establishes Pathways Learning Center and Pathways Wellness Center. Closes drop-in center Harmony House

2006 Establishes Laurel Hill Center Consumer Council
